Carrier Oils

While essential oils can add a lovely fragrance to your custom lip gloss, they can also cause irritation if applied without proper dilution. However, one of the best mediums with which to dilute essential oils are carrier oils. Carrier oils are unscented or lightly scented plant-derived oils that do not interfere with the therapeutic properties of essential oils. Additionally, they can be used alone or with other oils to nourish the skin. This makes carrier oils especially useful for making custom lip gloss, as they are able to both dilute strong oils and add extra moisturizing properties. 

Some things to think about when choosing a carrier oil for lip gloss include the aroma, absorption, skin type, and shelf life. Considering coconut oil is derived from the coconut fruit, it tends to smell slightly sweet. The fatty acids and polyphenols present in coconut oil make it a very luxurious oil that is perfect for nourishing the skin. Jojoba oil is derived from the seeds of the jojoba plant. Of all the carrier oils, jojoba oil is thought to mimic the skin’s natural oils most closely. It applies lightly and absorbs easily into the skin.
